Wisdom Bestows Well-Being

⁷ But we have this treasure in jars of clay^(A) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God^(B) and not from us. ⁸ We are hard pressed on every side,^(C) but not crushed; perplexed,^(D) but not in despair; ⁹ persecuted,^(E) but not abandoned;^(F) struck down, but not destroyed.^{(G) 10} We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,^(H) so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.^(I)

²⁴ A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.^{(A) 25} Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. ²⁶ But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,^(B) and the one who rules like the one who serves.^{(C) 27} For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.^{(D) 28} You are those who have stood by me in my trials. ²⁹ And I confer on you a kingdom,^(E) just as my Father conferred one on me, ³⁰ so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom^(F) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.^(G)

⁴² And he brought him to Jesus.

Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called^(A) Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter^[a]).^(B)

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael

⁴³ The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip,^(C) he said to him, “Follow me.”^(D)

⁴⁴ Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.^{(E) 45} Philip found Nathanael^(F) and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law,^(G) and about whom the prophets also wrote^(H)—Jesus of Nazareth,^(I) the son of Joseph.”^(J)

⁴⁶ “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?”^(K) Nathanael asked.

“Come and see,” said Philip.

⁴⁷ When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite^(L) in whom there is no deceit.”^(M)

⁴⁸ “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”

⁴⁹ Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi,^(N) you are the Son of God;^(O) you are the king of Israel.”^(P)

⁵⁰ Jesus said, “You believe^[b] because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” ⁵¹ He then added, “Very truly I tell you,^[c] you^[d] will see ‘heaven open,^(Q) and the angels of God ascending and descending^(R) on’^[e] the Son of Man.”^(S)
